Nvidia’s Volta Architecture Might be Coming to Desktops

We might be drawing close to the launch of GPUs based on Nvidia’s Volta architecture.

Many reports have hinted at a Q3 launch, we can narrow the rumors down for an August-September time frame. We now have solid evidence that announcement is imminent. The revelation comes from an update log of HWInfo.

If you head over to HWInfo’s update log page here, you’ll see that its upcoming update will add support for GV102 and GV104. For the those who don’t know, Nvidia uses this nomenclature to identify its GPUs. For example, the GPU that powers the GTX 1080 is codenamed GP104; where “P” represents the Pascal architecture.

Similarly, GV104 represents Nvidia’s latest Volta architecture. It is interesting because many reports have claimed another architecture, Turing or Ampere, will take its place. Volta was introduced as an AI/Deep Learning-centric architecture. There is possibility that a different architecture is planned for desktop graphics cards.

HWInfo is a system monitoring tool. So, it holds more credibility than mere rumors from anonymous sources. Volta could just grace desktop GPUs too.

It’s two years since GTX 10 series were released, we may get an update soon.
