First mobile phone featuring diamond glass is set to arrive in 2019, according to a report by CNET. What is a diamond screen, I hear you ask? Well it is exactly what is sounds. Little lab-grown diamonds are placed together to form the glass that will eventually be used for a display panel.

Forget about Gorilla Glass, which are chemically bathed to give strength, if you have been keeping your phone under the protection of a tempered glass protector, the first phone featuring a diamond glass display might be the answer to your constant fears. What’s even more relieving is that these diamond screens can be paired with Gorilla Glass for extra protection.

According to the report, Akhan Semiconductor is currently stress-testing its Mirage Diamond Glass with several phone manufacturers. Since this is a new technology and manufacturing constraints that follow with such, Akhan says it will be working with only one phone manufacturer at first, before moving to provide for multiple manufacturers. The report also says that Akhan is still ironing out the kinks, more specifically, making sure the glass surface does not cause touch sensitivity issues and is not reflective enough to distract users. It seems that it will be a while before diamond screens is a component that can be mass produced.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how well diamond screens hold up. Mobile phone screens may reach a point where we they can sustain accidental drops without us worrying each time.
