Nintendo Q3’FY17: Switch Surpasses Wii U Lifetime Sales, Super Mario Odyssey Sells 9.07 Million Copies
Nintendo Q3’FY17 financial earnings have been made public this week. In a nutshell, Nintendo had a very successful quarter that ended on December 31, 2017.
Nintendo Switch has reached lifetime sales of 14.86 million, surpassing sales of its predecessor Wii U, which managed to sell only 13.56 million units during its lifetime. Thanks to a stream of first-party exclusives that have graced the system in its first year alone and titles such as Super Mario Odyssey released during the last quarter, Nintendo managed to earn 7.24 million Switch consoles, coupled with 25.08 million in software sales. Speaking of Super Mario Odyssey, the game has sold 9.07 million copies since launch. Coming in second and third in lifetime sales is Mario Kart 8 with 7.33 million copies and Splatoon 2 with 4.91 million copies, respectively. Software sales of Switch have reached 52.57 million.
Xenoblade Chronicles, which launched earlier this month, has already managed to sell 1.06 million copies. In fact, Switch now has eight million-selling games already. It is a tremendous achievement and it means every exclusive released thus far has sold a million copies.
Its handheld brother, Nintendo 3DS, has reached total sales of 71.99 million units, after selling 3 million units during the quarter. Nintendo noted a year-on-year decrease in hardware and software sales for the handled, but said the handheld saw an increase in sales in the US during holiday season.
Nintendo now expects to sell 15 million units and 53 million in software sales during the current fiscal year. It should be an easy milestone to achieve given the impending launch of Bayonetta 2.
The Japanese gaming giant’s nine-month profit rose to 31.3% compared to the same during 2016.
