Apple is currently in the process of making iOS 11.3 available to public in the Spring, but the Cupertino-based giant is planning ahead for its big update. According to a scoop by Axios, Apple has already outlined its strategy for iOS 12.

Instead of focusing on introducing new features, Apple will focus on improving performance and software experience. In a meeting held by Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi earlier this month, employees were reportedly briefed on this strategy.

The move does not appear too surprising. Going back to late last year, Apple was heavily criticized by its customers when evidences regarding overtime performance degradation of iPhones came to light. Users noted decreased performance going from each iOS update, most notably after iOS 10.2.1. It was discovered that replacing the iPhone’s battery returned the performance back up. Geekbench owner revealed in a detailed blog post that Apple introduced CPU throttling in iOS 10.2.1 for devices with aging batteries.

Apple admitted to such in a public apology but explained the feature was put in place to avoid random shutdowns. After CEO Tim Cook confirmed this month, iOS 11.3 preview outlined a new feature coming to iPhone that will allow users to check battery health status, and if they want, can turn off CPU throttling entirely.

It seems that Apple has not taken the feedback lightly. The next iOS version might just be focused around performance – and that’s not a bad thing. We will keep you posted as we hear more.
