When it comes to creating a great snygery between hardware and software, Apple loves to have tight control on its devices. The Cuppertino giant is now looking to part ways with Intel, Bloomberg reported this week.

The report cites sources close to the matter that Apple is aiming to design its own chips for Macs, starting from 2020. The project is reportedly codenamed “Kalamata” internally and is in early developmental phase. It comes as no surprise to anyone who knows even a little about how Apple has been moving its business forward. From designing its own SoCs based on ARM-architecture starting from the iPhone 5 to putting a fullstop on its long-running relatioship with Imagination in favor of its own designed GPU in the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, Apple has been moving away from relying on others manufacturers. Intel’s shares were down 9.2 percent following the news.

Designing chips in-house allows Apple to have a tighter control over its hardware and software integration. Above all, it makes them independent of relying timelines that do not suit their own. A recent rumor, if true, sees Apple prototyping MicroLED display technology for Apple Watch. However, Apple may still use Intel’s foundry services to manufacture their chips.
